WASHINGTON, May 16 A source close to the State attorneys general said on Saturday talks with software giant Microsoft Corp. (MSFT - news) had collapsed.
''It appears that it's over,'' the source, who declined to be named, told Reuters. Representatives of 20 states and the Federal government had held two days of talks in Washington in a bid to avoid the filing of a big antitrust case.

The Justice Department confirmed in a brief statement that the talks were over.

''The discussions between the Justice Department, a coalition of State attorneys general and Microsoft ended today without resolution,'' it said. ''At this point they are not expected to resume.''

The source close to the states said the talks ended when Microsoft withdrew a major concession it had offered on Thursday to allow computer makers to modify the startup screen consumers see when they switch on their computer for the first time. ''They (Microsoft) walked away from the discussion,'' the source said.
