Why in the world would Oracle be interested in Progress?

Certainly not the database technology since this is pretty solidly *behind* Oracle's own. It may be easier to administer and run on less iron, but I really can't see Oracle marketing the Progress DB as Oracle Lite, can you?

Certainly not the 4GL. This should have gone OO and fully compiled back when they made the transition to GUI. This is a major problem which Progress needs to get beyond if it is going to grow long term. Besides, have you noticed Oracle being interested in the whole idea of a 4GL?

Certainly not Appivity and Crescent. They might be OK on their own, but it is hardly worth swallowing all of Progress to get them. That would be like easting an orange when you were only interested in the seeds.

Certainly not the VAR channel. While it is 60+% of Progress' revenue streams and there are a lot of good applications out there, especially if many of them would ever make it to real GUI client/server, Oracle has never shown any inclination to want to manage and develop an application VAR channel. Think they would start now?

So, exactly why is it you think this is such a great acquisition?
