Bill -
1) According to some CPQ people in MFG they are ramping up production of new products to be announced over the next 4-6 weeks, they think inventory will be were it needs to be by mid june. I have not verified any of this with people in the channel.
2) There are some concerns with quality related to the BTO model. CPQ has built its reputation on quality and they are working to maintain that while still allowing channel assembly. Rumor is that CPQ may need to change some of the products to reduce the need for highly skilled people in the BTO cycle.
3) most people think there will be additional layoffs at CPQ/Tandem, maybe as many as another 2000 to 4000 on top of the 15000 at DEC.
4) Since I got squared up on which approval was which, I guess I can take a swing at that. Apparently the FTC has stopped asking for more documents which usually means they are nearing completion but no one wants to pick a date.
5) Alta Vista is a technology leader in the search business, and is the muscle behind YAHOO! but many of the key people who created it left when DEC balked at the IPO. CPQ has not determined if there is more value to keeping it or selling, but will probably decide quickly after the acquisition is complete.
hope that helps...
