Can anyone explain why no other company can clone the MSFT OS?

Oh, it's been tried, e.g. Sun's WABI. But Windows isn't static, there's no way they can keep up, and they can't compete on price. It makes no economic sense.

It's completely different with CPUs, because the architectural feature set doesn't change, the implementation just gets more efficient. It's like being stuck with DOS 1.0 features forever and competing on who can squeeze the most bytes out of the executable.
