I find this talk of persuading Japanese to consume more products and hard goods laughable. How many proponents of this idea have ever been to Japan?

I live in New England. My house is big and full of stuff. If I get more stuff I add more rooms on to the house. I live on two acres -- plenty of room for more and more stuff. Consumption? no problem.

Japanese live in small houses and, nearly all urban dwellers, in apartments. They've made a virtue of spareness out of necessity. They don't have room for a lot of stuff. Most Japanese won't even invite Americans (or other Japanese) into their homes because they are too small for entertaining (which supports a great restaurant culture).

I have no idea how Japan can turn its economy around but American style consumption is just not possible.
