The USRX press release says:

Software upgrades to add x2 to Courier products will be available
in January, 1997. x2 software upgrades for the Total Control
Enterprise Network Hub will be available in February, 1997.
x2 software upgrades for other systems products will be available in
February and March, 1997, depending on the specific product.

The courier upgrades are not important because they only work in client mode. USRX is just trying to make marketing points (and I suspect that this ploy will be successful, though it could backfire). For those technically aware: what's the point in upgrading a modem in January when you cant use the upgrade to call anybody until February or March? How many of the buying public realize that x2 comes in client/server (to use USRX's terms) modes and that two clients can *not* talk to each other at 56 kbit/s. You *must* have digital access (T1 or ISDN) to work in server mode and the 56 kbit/s data rate is *only* from server to client. (Uhhh, I just realized that I don't know if two servers can talk 56 kbit/s at each other or not. Anybody know?)

Hubs need to work in server mode. If ASND can deliver on their promise to ship equivalent technology servers in the 1st quarter then I don't see much difference. The "get the upgrade free if you buy now" trick is just good marketing on USRX's part. Lets see how ASND responds. Should be interesting.

I expect the SHVA (and other) rumors will have more short term effect on the stock price than anything USRX does, though. I also expect a near term pullback in the market in general, so the day-trading shorts might be right for a while.
