RNTK needs a major contract with a major oil refiner or supply
firm in order to secure its stock price forever. Hopefully
(and preferably) that first major will be Texaco. As the leader in
gasification technology, not only would a deal with Texaco
insure that Rentech's refinery-based Fischer-Tropsch unit
be installed in a number of its own and affiliated refineries
across the world, but it would also guarantee the marketing of
its product to those independent refiners that are looking into
or are currently using a Texaco gasification system. Furthermore,
a deal with Texaco, as was the case with Syntroleum, will also
make Rentech more attractive to the other major firms standing
on the sidelines that are currently exploring other new avenues
for gasification besides electricity and chemical production.

Earnings are inconsequential right now and the market has known
that for some time now (including last February when a similar loss
was released). Like many small-time biotechs with their yet-to-be-approved experimental drugs that are also in the red (I can name a dozen that are trading
over $5), Rentech's stock price has/is trading on speculation of future revenues (in this case, big-money oil contracts). If the Texaco negotiations are ever terminated without a successful conclusion, that will do more to affect the stock price than a catastrophic quarter could ever do at this stage.
