Yousef,>>>I will let Intel's flawless execution on both the .35um and .25um process development and transition to manufacturing serve as an example of what can be accomplished with focused leadership by management and self discipline/contribution by individuals. I suggest if you want a very "creative" company, you might look at AMD or Cyrix.<<<

I hope you are speaking for yourself and not for Intel's management. There are many examples of companies that were initially started by a spark of creativity and grew to maturity with the help of "professional" (disciplined) management only to be extinguished when the "professional" management types overwhelmed any creativity that was left.

The clear answer is that you have to have both - and the difficulty is to maintain the balance - without people like you taking over and destroying any creativity that is left or letting people like Jay take over and letting the company stumble into Chaos.

The clear answer to Intel's success is that they have a very rigid and driven genius like Andy Grove whose rigidity was tempered by a Gordon Moore or a Craig Barrett.

In the case of AMD, there is probably no one there to rein in Jerry Sanders.

Apple's best days were when Steve Jobs had John Scully holding him in check - but when Scully got rid of Jobs, the "professional" manager just didn't have the creative juices to run a company like Apple.

Someone once said that genius is 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration - that may be true - only he didn't tell us that it was the 1 % that creates 99% of the wealth. Anybody can sweat.
