" OT: Sure seems strange that Clinton and Gore are taking some of the positions they are
on IT. They campaigned hard as being the information-age duo; especially Wooden Al.
Amazes me that Wooden Al has said virtually nothing about the Year 2000 issue. On
second thought, no, it doesn't. Y2k has a negative tone and giving a couple of PII's to a
school makes for such a so much warmer photo op."

Thanks for the response, Tim. BTW, what would you consider a "moderate" pull back? 10 or 15%?

Assuming that reports that the federal government has more serious problems than private industry with this issue, this may be a mixed bag politically for a potential presidential candidate in the year 2000. I do training for one of the large GSEs( government sponsored enterprises) and know that they are busting their ass to deal with this issue, and for good reason. As a publically owned company, they also have more money,, better paid people (and, therefore, usually better qualified people) and less bureaucracy to deal with than an organization like, say, the IRS. If Al or Newt or anyone else is going to wrap themselves around this issue, they had better be prepared for the possibility that it might blow up in their face, especially Gore's.

I'm just cynical enough to think that your last statement is correct: I'm sure both parties have researched the public reaction to the issue and will follow rather than lead public discourse.

Incidentally, the Ambassador to India was also on this morning using the Loral technology China sale approval as an excuse for the nuke tests. I think you may be right. Next week may provide us with another buying opportunity and, since I'm no market timer, I may just see if it gets hammered and pony up for some more. It's hard for me to believe that this stuff will bring Loral to its knees. Nonetheless, I think I'll call Loral Corporate Communications and/or IR on Monday to get their official reaction to this story.

Anyone want to make any bets on whether or not it is one of the top stories on Meet The Press this morning? I say yes.
