The ability to cruise the 'Net and the WWW is essential to the OS of a PC...just as much as it is to a PalmPilot, Cellular phone or Web TV..."The times they are a changin".

I'd have to argue with you. A PC's OS provides services to other programs and helps you manage your PC's resources. An application allows you to do work. Applications allow you to create, modify, view, etc. information. The application relies on the OS to save stuff to disk, put it on the screen or out the modem. Saying that you need an OS to do work is MSFTs justification for taking over the entire PC desktop except for a few crumbs they don't currently care about.

MSFT is a monopoly. They let someone else come up with WWW (long before IE or Netscape) and then decided they were going to destroy the competition and keep it all for themselves.

Killing off the competition can't be good in the long run.

If the line drawn means breaking MSFT up into let's say an OS company and an applications company then maybe that needs to be looked at.

BUT we all (or at least should) know that the government cannot compete with commercial enterprise in any area and having them dictate to companies what can and can't be done is also very scary.

I'm all for less, make that much less government, how bout turning the US Postal Service into a publicly traded company? Hmmm, maybe we should turn the government over to the public and make an IPO.

best solutions I've heard.
