Bill,

Just a couple of notes:

>>The only chips still a monopoly are the P-II 400 MHZ. The AMD new chip 3D-350 seems to be a match for the P-II-350 in performance and is far cheaper.<<

We just got some Dell duel Pentium-IIs 300s at my school. We have been using duel Intergraph Pentium 200s which are 2 generations back I believe. The Intergraphs have better graphics cards, but still you would think the Dells would scream. Not so. Not much faster at most stuff. Surprising.

>>Of course Apple is trying to get the price down on the CPU supply. They will always try to get the best price on each new contract.<<

Apple has said that Rhapsody will support the Merced chip. I think they are even contemplating a Merced Apple machine. I think this put a lot of pressure on IBM/Mot. Because of the vast advantage in speed of the PPC chip they've been able to keep the price up but I think this will change radically as the Merced chip launch date gets closer and solidifies. They'd be STUPID plain and simple not to utilize the speed/production/price advantage to grow market share just before the Merced launches. Of course they've blown it before. I think they'll try to squeeze those bigger profit margins for awhile longer though.
