Expensive yes, but never lagging on the technical features, so this does not ring true as to what would have been. When the Mac was introduced color monitors/cards were really expensive. My first EGA monitor 5 years later was $700 and was a "good deal". Even today very few people I know buy a 21" monitor because of the cost.
