SANCTUARY WOODS LAUNCHES FIRST NFL(TM) READING PROGRAM
FOR KIDS

Innovative Combination of Sports and Learning Makes Kids Interested in
Reading

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 13 /CNW/ - Sanctuary Woods Multimedia,
(Vancouver: SWD) the developer of award-winning children's educational
software, today announced the launch of their NFL(TM) Reading program.
Designed to help kids from ages nine to 13 improve reading, spelling and
vocabulary skills, NFL(TM) Reading tackles the difficult problem of getting
kids interested in reading by using content that's interesting to kids: real
pro football information and facts. Other unique features in the game include
licensed properties from the National Football League (NFL) and Players, Inc.
(the NFL players' association). NFL(TM) Reading is the third product in the
company's Head Coach(TM) line of products and follows the popular NFL(TM) Math
and Major League(R) Math programs.
``NFL Reading is the next step in expanding the Head Coach product line
to meet the needs of our customers,'' said Charlotte Walker, president of
Sanctuary Woods. ``Parents have asked us for products covering other subject
areas, in addition to math, because our sports-learning titles have been so
successful in providing strong academic material in a context kids care
about.''
If reading material isn't interesting or relevant to kids, how will they
care enough to learn the difference between knowing what a sentence says and
what it means? That's why NFL(TM) Reading is packed with passages featuring
real pro football facts and stats. To play against the computer or each other,
kids chose their favorite NFL(TM) teams. They call a play, then read a
passage. How well they answer determines how well their team does in a 3D
photo-realistic football game.
NFL(TM) Reading covers three basic skill sets: reading comprehension;
spelling; and vocabulary. Kids can enter their own spelling words to use in
the game and read more than 1,800 passages packed with interesting information
about real NFL(TM) teams and players. They can also polish spelling and
vocabulary skills by unscrambling words and defining football terms. Multiple
levels of difficulty let kids of different ages or skills compete against each
other on a level playing field. Just for fun, there are four arcade-style
games that kids play to improve their team's running, passing, blocking and
tackling skills. NFL(TM) Reading also includes a ``Scouting Report'' feature,
which quickly becomes part of the overall strategy because it gives tips
throughout the game and transparently encourages kids to read in order to
succeed in the game.

How the Game Works
Like other Head Coach programs, players start by choosing their favorite
professional teams to play for and against. Or, two kids can play against each
other, representing their favorite NFL(TM) team. To execute a play
successfully, the player must accurately answer a question. With each correct
answer, the player's team will move the ball down field with passing or
running plays.
When a question is answered incorrectly, kids can expect that their team
will execute a bad play, thus impeding victory. Football strategy plays a part
in the outcome of the game as well and kids are able to control physical
(running, blocking, passing and tackling) and intellectual (strategy and
planning) aspects of the game.

Game Features
NFL(TM) Reading has multiple levels of difficulty and has a multi-player
capability which lets two kids challenge each other on the same computer.
The ``Coach's Corner'' helps players learn new reading skills or to
reinforce what they currently know with special 30-45 second sessions on
reading concepts. The Coach's Corner is always accessible from the main screen
with a push of a button.
NFL(TM) Reading includes a trivia library and NFL(TM) player database
accessible during the game. Kids can access these reference areas to research
answers to questions. All of the NFL(TM) teams are represented and more than
150 NFL(TM) players and their stats are included in the database.
