Upgrade aimed toward business providers, but analysts question its scalability

Microsoft this month at Networld+Interop announced details of Version 2.0 of its Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS), to be available this summer.

The new version, based on Windows NT Server 4.0, is designed to give ISPs a broad suite of integrated back-end applications, which include Web hosting, e-commerce, community, and managed network services.

But while Microsoft is positioning the product as a scalable platform that can handle "tens of millions of users," analysts and Unix competitors such as Sun Microsystems have questioned whether MCIS 2.0 running on NT will be capable of working well in high-capacity environments..."
