The guillotine is also a symbol of revolution which I really don't think you want. Just look around and tell me what country you would rather live in and if you can find one why aren't you there? The reasons for jury trial are simple. It takes the power of the state away and gives it to the people. That's all we need, one disgruntled judge with a chip on his shoulder making life and death decisions over all of us.

So in France's perfect world it's the power of the entire state against one person who is given no recourse of being defended by someone familiar with law and he is at the mercy of one judge? Seems rather dictatorial to say the least. Are you sure you aren't a liberal?

As for swift execution of sentence I don't have a qualm with but I also don't feel that the power of appeal should be completely wiped out either.
