The point of legal monopolies is perfectly acceptable&#151there are cases when a legal monopoly is perhaps desirable in economic theory and practical industry application. But it doesn't apply to MSFT's business practices.

The possible demise of Netscape via MicroTyson's anti-competitive ear-biting indeed harms the browser end-user community. Ensuring choice in the software industry is desirable. The required economies of scale in the power industry, however, lead to a different conclusion&#151a legal monopoly. Yet, this too is changing&#151locally you'll note the new competitive issues with PG&E here in the Bay area.

As far as not paying for your first copy of NN, whilst you did indeed legally obtain it, continued use thereof beyond the evaluation period without payment would be technically illegal. It was not feasible nor advisable for NN to persue every Tom, Dick, and Harriet who did this, though. Quicktime and Acrobat end-user plug-ins have never required payment, so it's a moot point.
