Kurt, as you said, that is not competition. Do not confuse IP traffic with the media that carries it. To do so would be to think that, say, a new tunnel under a river is a threat to vacation travel. Quite the opposite: as more efficient modes are developed to carry IP traffic, who will profit are those companies that are postured to push bits across that media. The only way the media itself would threaten a company like DGIV is if there were a monopoly that could control the entire worldwide IP network infrastructure and force all IP traffic through them. Hardly a threat; not even WorldCom is able to do that. What we see is just the opposite, a fragmentation of the traffic carrying networks.
