I went through the same disappointment when I bought my PowerMac 8500 120. I had the cash but no 8500 was to be found. I finally got one about 1 month after they shipped.

The point I want to make is that it is not cost effective to start building up an expensive inventory months and months before the product ships just to meet initial demand. It would be like Ford building 350,000 new F150 trucks before they ship the first one. Sure, they do need to have a good supply for the initial release, but somebody will have to decide how much inventory is appropriate.

I feel your pain! It would be a good idea to order one from either the AppleStore or CompUSA or an online seller to get your name on the waiting list (if they all have such a thing).
