From the Microsoft conference call today, it appears that there are only about four things that Microsoft insists be part of the Windows experience:

1) The taskbar
2) The start button
(those two for sure)
It wasn't spelled out exactly, but it sounded like MSFT also wants OEMs to keep
3) The "My Computer" icon
4) The "Recycle Bin".

That's it. According to MSFT execs, vendors have at least 80% of the screen real estate to do with as they wish, for that "first boot out of the box". I think that's very generous.

Do you think that McDonalds has a right to give their customers a uniform experience? The store layout? The burger contents? The burger boxes, the bags? Hmmmm????

Do you think that Microsoft has a right to give their customers that same quality provided by that uniform experience, even if it's only a few things they ask?

Netscape doesn't even have any complaints here. OEMs are free to bundle Netscape's products. That was proved today. HP Kayak. Netscape browser comes preinstalled and default browser.

Why were so many people whining that this wasn't possible? I wonder how much other stuff is BS.
