Suharto plans to step down by year end -minister

JAKARTA, May 19 (Reuters) - Indonesian President Suharto has drawn up a plan to hold parliamentary elections within three to six months and to step down by the end of the year, Environment Minister Juwono Sudarsono said on Tuesday.

''There will be a new president by the end of the year,'' he told Reuters.

Juwono said Suharto decided on the plan after a meeting with nine influential Moslem leaders on Tuesday morning before he made a historic televised address to promise new elections under a new electoral law as soon as possible.

The new legislation would be prepared within two months and was likely to do away with restrictions on the number of political parties and contestants, Juwono said in a telephone interview.

He said the powerful Indonesian military had agreed to the plan, but had expressed some doubts about whether the proposed time frame was practical.

Initial reaction from opponents to Suharto's address was negative. Students who have demanding his departure for three months said they did not believe the 76-year-old president. A prominent Moslem leader said scheduled demonstrations against Suharto would go ahead on Wednesday as planned.
