Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router Graduates to the Head of the Class At the University
of California, Riverside

BusinessWire, Tuesday, May 19, 1998 at 12:16

ROCHESTER, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1998--

Bourns College of Engineering Upgrades Network to
Support Multimedia and 3D Modeling Applications

Cabletron Systems (NYSC:CS) today announced that the Bourns
College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside, has
selected Cabletron's award-winning SmartSwitch Router to augment
slower, more expensive, router-based networks. Cabletron's networking
solutions will be used to pave the way for higher performance and more
secure computer communications throughout the engineering school.
With the SmartSwitch Router, Bourns' network will support fast
access to multimedia, remote dorm room communications and 3D modeling
applications. The SmartSwitch Router will also provide connections
between high-speed servers and hundreds of lab computers located
throughout the campus. The engineering school is also targeting a
future connection to the college's electron microscope, providing
students with easy access to ongoing experiments.
In addition, network administrators will be provided with
powerful tools for controlling access to the school's network
resources, monitoring and filtering users as they enter or exit the
network.
"The engineering college has become a popular target for
hackers." said professor Mart Molle, University of California,
Riverside. "Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router enables us to initiate
access control lists, thwarting attacks, while simultaneously giving
our own users full Internet privileges."
"We used to spend a lot of time designing our networks to avoid
the performance penalty of going through routers, but not anymore,"
Molle added. "The old rule that states -- switch when you can, route
when you must -- does not apply to Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router."
The SmartSwitch Router performs 100 times faster than traditional
routers, at a fraction of the cost. With pricing beginning at $499 per
port for Fast Ethernet, Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router offers:

--15 - 30 million packets-per-second forwarding capability.

--System capacity of two million Layer-4 flows/250,000 route entries.

--IP, IPX and wire-speed multicast support, as well as security via
access control lists and Layer-4 application prioritization.

The eight-slot SmartSwitch Router (SSR-8) is currently shipping,
with up to 14 Gigabit Ethernet ports and 56 10/100 ports. A 16-slot
SmartSwitch Router (SSR-16), supporting up to 30 Gigabit Ethernet and
120 10/100 ports, is expected to begin shipping in the second half of
1998.
