[Teligent Finds Growth In Underserved Telecom Markets, CEO Says]
NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Teligent Inc. is growing more quickly than it had anticipated, mainly because of its positioning in an underserved market, according to Chairman and Chief Executive Alex Mandl.
In an interview with CNBC Tuesday afternoon, Mandl said the company is focusing on serving what he believes is an overlooked segment of the telecom industry - local telephone networks.
"There is a lot of long-distance capacity being built," he said. "By comparison ... there are not a lot of players that are addressing this need to feed data to the end user."
Teligent (TGNT), the closely watched upstart phone-service provider, will enter more markets than it had expected this year and next.
Mandl said his company also benefits by addressing the needs of small to midsize companies, which he claims the telecom giants largely ignore.
"Fortune 500 companies get a pretty good deal from phone companies," he said. "It's the next six million (that) tend to be underserved. That's where we come in."
The chairman declined to speculate as to when the company would post a profit, but he did say he expected strong revenue growth going forward.
"When you build a new business like this one," he said, "profits are not around the corner." |
