JPR,

I couldn't figure out who is calling the writer from the NYT an idiot.

In any case, I have an opinion on them, which is that they're just stooges for the U.S. State Department and White House.

If U.S. interests are threatened by India developing a true multi-stage thermonuclear weapon, then it falls to the NYT to cast some seeds of doubt.

Nonetheless, the NYT article interviewed a number of people in the U.S. weapons establishment, and there was no clear consensus that this was a fake.

It seems somewhat stupid of the U.S. to try and cast doubts as to what India has. If India really has this device, and it worked as expected on the first test, they have something to be very proud of.

The only way that I can see to prove to the world that they are not lying would be for India to publicly disclose information about their test that would be considered top secret by all the nuclear superpowers. Such disclosure would run counter to the very same non-proliferation regime that's causing all the fuss in the first place.
