The UP site does help clarify one of the potential markets for CyberDisplay in mobile phones.

Adapted from uplanet.com

Primary market consists of the millions of mobile subscribers who want to access time-critical or location-dependent information over the Internet or the corporate intranet, while away from the office. They include executives and professionals who travel frequently with mobile phones, and wireless work groups such as salespeople who require wireless messaging and real-time access to corporate information.

The wireless data market will increase from $700 million in 1994 to $3.8billion in 2000 (The Yankee Group, January 1995). Worldwide cellular demand will break the 100 million subscriber mark in 1997, hit 200 million in 1999, and swell to 284 million in 2001 (MTA-EMCI, January 1996). The Internet will enable a dramatic expansion of mobile computing in Fortune1000 companies (Forrester Research, 1996).

This translates into some very attractive revenue opportunities.

Subscriptions: Business travelers and mobile professionals place a high value on time-critical and/or location-dependent information. The value goes up even more if it is customized for their needs, and is "pushed" to them, based on events. Services like real-time stock quotes, airline flight information and changes, maps, driving directions, real-time sports scores, and custom news are available on the platform today.

Co-marketing benefits: There are tremendous co-marketing and brand awareness opportunities in working with wireless carriers. These include press releases; reciprocal listings/logo on carrier Web sites; inclusion in point-of-purchase materials, promotions and advertisements; and, last but not least, the opportunity to be included on mobile subscribers personal "home pages". Each subscriber can manage their phone services from this personalized home page. The user will typically visit their home page several times a day or week, which translates into tremendous exposure for building your brand awareness.

Transactions: There is a large opportunity for transaction-based services, such as driving directions, online product purchases and transactions, such as airline tickets.

Advertising: Faxing is integrated into the platform. Since you control the contents of the fax page, you could include advertisements, coupons and promotional information on faxes.

Business and intranet Applications for mobile phones solve critical productivity and information-access problems for mobile users who do 20% or more of their work away from their office or personal computer. These mobile workers need frequent, unpredictable access to corporate databases, intranets, and company documents to get deals and work done. The most important concept is that there are many business problems that cost companies money, that can be solved by applying existing software, databases, and intranet applications to wireless communications platform.

Why Data on Wireless Handheld Devices?

Mobile workers often carry laptops, but are often in customer offices, lobbies, trucks, vans, or airports where laptop access and dial-in connections are inconvenient or impossible. Many of these users are already using mobile phones and PDAs as their "lifeline" to their customers and co-workers. Mobile professionals, executives, field sales and service personnel, and even taxi/delivery drivers, are empowered with direct wireless access to the corporate databases and intranet applications that help them attract and retain the corporation's most valuable asset-their customers.
