just to throw in my $0.02 of vague knowledge

the 400,000 AS/400 number is the number sold I believe, rather than the number out there which would be a lot less. *In general* these are running packages which *in general* are upgradeable (SSA, JBA, JDE are the big ones. Far, far less bespoke code than the mainframes and unlikely to be any more of a problem than UNIX boxes. Quite possibly less as the database, for example, is integrated.

I remember the 40,000 VSE number from years back (about 1990?)... hard to believe they are all still out there

The number of plug compatibles would be no more than 20% of the number of IBM 390 machines. Most are Hitachi these days.

Still, lots of systems.
