Re: numbers of mainframes etc: just to throw in my $0.02 of vague knowledge the 400,000 AS/400 number is the number sold I believe, rather than the number out there which would be a lot less. In general these are running packages which in general are upgradeable (SSA, JBA, JDE are the big ones. Far, far less bespoke code than the mainframes and unlikely to be any more of a problem than UNIX boxes. Quite possibly less as the database, for example, is integrated. I remember the 40,000 VSE number from years back (about 1990?)... hard to believe they are all still out there The number of plug compatibles would be no more than 20% of the number of IBM 390 machines. Most are Hitachi these days. Still, lots of systems. Patrick.
