nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com

May 19, 1998 (BEIJING) -- China Public Multi-media Telecommunications
Network began services recently using ordinary telephone lines or N-ISDN.
Users can dial "169" anywhere in China to get access to the network.

The network provides electronic business services such as information
searches on a Chinese interface and high-speed data transmission on local
networks.

It also provides users' special virtual network services such as Net shopping
or remote medical treatment, according to Leng Rongquan, an official with
China Telecom.

The network has been undergoing a trial in 26 provinces, municipalities and
autonomous regions, said Leng.

He added that the network, with about 1,200 data banks and application
systems, has 270,000 subscribers.

China Public Multi-media Telecommunications Network will cover the whole
of China by October.
