I would like to start off this thread with a contribution:

I have gone back over that last two years and correlated my trading to
the graph of the Nasdaq. Since I am long in most of my positions, it is probably not surprising that the months when I made GOOD money were the same months that showed a nice steady uptrend in the Nasdaq. (Like Jan-Apr98, May-Sept97, Aug-Nov 96.) I have decided that it is almost more important to know the market trend, then to know the stock. Seems like such a simple concept yet I am amazed at how long it has taken for this to sink in to my trading decisions.
