LG Electronics Considering Zenith Sale

(5:10 p.m. EDT, 5/19/98)

By Jack Robertson

LG Electronics Co. of South Korea said yesterday it is considering selling its 55% interest in Zenith Electronics Corp. - although industry analysts were skeptical who might want to purchase the stake in the red-ink U.S. television set manufacturer.

Zenith last week reported a loss of $38 million for its latest fiscal quarter, up from a $25 million lost for the similar quarter a year ago. The U.S. firm said it must secure $225 million in additional financing to sustain operations, but LG which has pumped nearly as much money in the past into Zenith has balked at any further cash infusions.

Even if LG manages to sell off its Zenith interest, the Korean firm is expected to retain some advanced technology of the U.S. company to apply in its own operations. This includes Zenith's set-top box applications, and possibly large contracts for digital set-tops that Zenith holds.

LG has also hoped that Zenith would help it launch a chip set the Korean firm had developed for the emerging Digital TV market. Even if LG abandons Zenith, the firm is expected to push its DTV chip set in its own consumer electronics products and to market to other vendors.
