I think the break-up of the USSR was the logical consequence of the political reforms of Glasnot and Perestroika set in motion by Mr. Gorbachev, combined with a softening up the Warsaw Pact. Once people in the satellite states everywhere (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Kasakhstan, Ukraine et al.) realized that their Soviet oppressors softened their resolve, they grabbed their chances. I don't think that the US administration is responsible for that. I really think it was "internal stuff" of the USSR and Warsaw Pact.

But I'm willing to learn.
