In addition to fracturing and acidizing to improve permeability, there are techniques to
increase pressure, such as water flooding and gas injection, or to reduce
viscosity, such as steam injection. Some of these, too, are risky. If I recall
correctly, the Soviets had a very ambitious waterflood program (I can't remember
if it was in Siberia or old Caucuses fields) in the late 70s or early 80s. It went
badly wrong -- led to a huge increase in the water/oil recovery ratio. I don't
recall if they permanently ruined the reserviors, of if they just couldn't afford
to fix their mistake. FWIW.
