Nortel gets $15 billion contract from SBC for network equipment.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, May 20 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel (Northern Telecom)
announced today that it has signed a contract to deliver leading-edge network products to SBC
Communications Inc. As part of the second quarter deal, SBC has awarded Nortel a five-year
contract with an expected worth in excess of $US 1.5 billion that covers Nortel's industry leading
DMS-100 digital switching equipment, hardware and software upgrades and product conversion
services for the company's seven-state region.

''We are very pleased to foster such a strategic relationship with SBC to develop its network and
deliver new services to customers,'' said Clarence J. Chandran, president, Public Carrier Networks,
Nortel. ''With the delivery of our service-ready networks, service providers are able to easily
forecast their network needs and deliver services when their customers want them.''

The network conversion positions SBC to continue to implement and deliver new technologies to
serve customers in the future.

Nortel works with customers in more than 150 countries and territories to design, build and
integrate their communications products and advanced digital networks.

Nortel had 1997 revenues of $US 15.5 billion and has approximately 73,000 employees worldwide.
