LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 18, 1998--Cable & Satellite '98
TrueDoc to be core font rendering technology in LSI
Logic's Integra(tm) set-top-box chip set
Bitstream Inc., (Nasdaq: BITS - news) announced today that it has license its TrueDoc(R) high-quality font rendering technology to LSI Logic. TrueDoc will be the core font rendering in LSI Logic's Integra set-top-box chip sets and future variants to support the Interactive Digital Satellite and Cable marketplaces. TrueDoc will provide complete multilingual capabilities for LSI Logic's worldwide product distribution requirements as part of a turnkey solution. TrueDoc will be implemented in LSI Logic's set-top-box development platforms.
''LSI's strategy to provide software with the set-top-box chip set is a significant development for the interactive television (ITV) marketplace,'' said Greg Porell, Director of Product Management and Strategic Planning for Bitstream's Type and Type Technology Division. ''This solution resolves the font rendering memory requirements problem the ITV market has stumbled over the past several years. TrueDoc will provide the high-quality, multilingual character generation LSI's customers are demanding without placing high memory demands on the set-top.''
TrueDoc is an extremely compact and efficient font rendering technology designed to deliver high-quality text across multiple platforms. Compatible with all industry standard font formats, TrueDoc's low memory requirements and low processor overhead is ideal for embedded environments. TrueDoc delivers scaleable outlines, producing well-formed characters regardless of output size. A number of special effects are available from TrueDoc which enhance text quality on all low-resolution displays. Special effects include antialising and color blending to produce the best possible output for text and background color combinations. TrueDoc can be integrated into a server / client configuration, conserving bandwidth and memory resources on the receiving platform. Multiple language support is provided by TrueDoc, which has the ability to store double-byte data at the server level, or in the set-top box configuration.
''LSI wants to provided a great font solution for its set-top-box platforms, and Bitstream's TrueDoc is the best solution,'' said Nicholas Dunn, Product Marketing Manager for set-top-boxes at LSI Logic Corporation [NYSE:LSI - news]. ''LSI Logic partnered with Bitstream tp provide the best turn-key solution for our customers.''
With Bitstream's TrueDoc technology in the chip set, LSI customers will be able to handle all language capabilities for worldwide set-top box distribution. As part of the chip set, Bitstream font technology will provide all start-up menus and electronic programming guide text on screen. LSI customers will have full-licensing opportunities for the Bitstream technology.
