I read this article again. A couple of comments on the article.
The authors do not claim their results are accurate. They are mainly interested in dealing with the employee stock options as compensation based on the ( current price- cost basis).

If the company paid the employee the $ cost basis. Then they would not be complaining.

Perhaps the company should loan the money to buy the stock at the beginning of an option period and then the employee can pay the company back the cost basis plus interest if he does not meet the option grant terms. If he does pass the vesting period then the company can forgive the loan.
