Hal, when you consider the number of types of peripherals, the number of OEMs building peripherals, and the different models of peripherals within each OEM's product lines, and then throw in the fact that each model is updated every year or so., just think of the task MSFT faced by trying to implement plug-n-play. How many different inkjet printers has HP alone introduced since the DeskJet 500? To top that off, we have this archaic x86 processor architecture that has a limited number of hardware interrupt request (IRQ) numbers...those IRQs are what usually trip up an attempt to install a plug-n-play device. Given the architecture that is in use, I think Microsoft is doing as well as anyone can expect. Installing peripherals is not going to be truly pain-free the majority of the time until USB devices are more widespread.
