Michelle,

Performance challenges in Java are an ongoing battle. Fortunately most of the performance problems are a result of bad implementation. It is VERY possible to create Java applets and applications capable of rapid response. For internet Applets it has been recognized that downloading JDBC drivers can be a very time consuming task at 28.8. That is one of many resons that IIOP is gaining tremendous support in the Java community. I seriously doubt though that the community would embrace a ORCL alternative unless it was based on a open standard. History (short as it is) has proven the Java community does not play the proprietary game.
