Gov. Fob James Announces ADTRAN's $150 Million Expansion In Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1998--Officials from ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN - news), a leader in
transmission products for high-speed digital communications, were joined by Alabama Governor Fob James and a number of local officials
today to break ground for the company's $150 million expansion in Huntsville which will create 1,500 new jobs at ADTRAN.

''I am pleased to announce the expansion of ADTRAN, a high-tech leader in Huntsville and Alabama for more than 12 years,'' Alabama
Governor Fob James said. ''In the next few years ADTRAN will create 1,500 jobs here in Huntsville. However, an even greater measure of the
significance of this announcement is that economists predict that, as a result of the new jobs at ADTRAN, more than 2,200 additional jobs will
be created in other sectors of this community.''

ADTRAN's expansion plans call for the construction of a 600,000 square foot facility located adjacent to its current 450,000 square foot facility
in Cummings Research Park West.

''We have plans for a big future at ADTRAN,'' said ADTRAN Chairman and CEO Mark C. Smith. ''Our new facility will allow us to expand
our business well into the next decade.''

ADTRAN's Huntsville operations consist of the company's engineering, research and development, quality and test functions, and light
assembly of high-speed telecommunications products.

Gov. James credited a partnership of state, city and county officials and local economic development groups, including the Huntsville/Madison
County Chamber of Commerce, for securing the expansion for Huntsville.
