AMD to introduce Alpha-bused K7s, 3DNow! & AGP K6-2, K6-3, Part III
As an alternative, Centaur, of Santa Clara, Calif., will release processors with
integrated memory that eliminate the need for a pipeline between the memory and the
chip.
IBM, Centaur's new foundry, is expected to manufacture the processors, and Centaur
is in discussions with offshore motherboard makers to build slightly modified boards for
the processors.
Despite the plans, Henry said the company will switch to Slot 1 if the market demands
it and the cost eventually comes down.
The cost of producing Slot 1-based systems may drop as a result of Intel's decision to
license the proprietary bus to a third-party chip set manufacturer. Intel Executive Vice
President Paul Otellini made that revelation at a keynote speech here yesterday.
Open licenses will breed more products and increased competition, and that
traditionally leads to lower costs.
In other PC Tech Forum news, IBM announced the 6X86MX PR300 and PR333
processors. The processors cost $217 and $299, respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities.
The PR333 will be delivered next month. |
