Haim, the Almanac also says:

"The absence of the Memorial Day week rally in 1996 can be attributed to the threat of rising interest rates and the the market's short term top after a 1000-point move over the previous seven months. In 1997, a 1000-point surge in six weeks paused during the Holiday week before resuming its climb in June."

It also says:

"It's always dangerous to publicize a favorable seasonal pattern.
A pattern that has been in effect for a long time is bound to attract a multitude of traders, who will obviously want to take advantage of
this bullish phenomenon"

I wonder what he means by THAT!
