I'm somewhat more encouraged after talking to USTX' CEO, Dan Cook, today. Two major areas from the conversation were prominent to me. One, their upgrade to "Extreme" (sic?) software (Ustman's heritage) in former Watson General accounts introduces additional value in terms of fuel inventory management strategies that make their products appealing to upper management, not just compliance officers. This implies a strong add-on market long after the retailers have decided how to meet the '98 deadline. Second, their integrated tank gauge product is being received very well in demo's and has a very high reorder rate.

Though the company is adding tanks (to monitor) at a decent clip, and Cook projects a pretty healthy pace to the additions through the rest of calendar '98, the above suggest a "fuel management" function that can provide Ustman beefier recurring revenues in the future. Not unlike a Y2K company, it's nice to know that there's a meaningful opportunity to look forward to beyond this year.

Another interesting point is that apparently two states have mandated SIR as one of a series of compliance mechanisms they are requiring UST owners to utilize. I asked Cook whether that seemed likely to expand to additional states. He believed it will likely spread.

Cook gave me the impression that the company will step up the investor public relations efforts within the next few weeks. He is aware of the sentiment in some quarters that the '98 compliance race has already mostly been run. Hopefully they'll do a good job of countering that with any new P.R. initiatives.
