Win Modems - Modems using minimal analog/digital hardware - have been around for a few years. Invariably, they tie up most of the CPU unless a VERY FAST CPU is available. Newer 56K "Soft Modems" have been developed and they require very fast Pentium/Pentium II processors to do the modem functions and leave enough CPU cycles to handle other duties - such as run a browser! Now, to run FASTER I/O devices such as ADSL or Cable Modems in software - at speeds of hundreds of thousands of bits/sec (or millions even!) - that would exceed the capacity of even the fastest Pentium IIs currently available. For the time being, dedicated hardware devices will be required to implement these functions. Paul
