Cadence Design Systems moves into embedded software services

The third reason Cadence saw for developing the group was the exploding growth of the embedded market. "Because of its segmentation, it is hard to determine the total size of the embedded applications software development market," said Murray. The fact that much of this development work has been done in-house further complicates an accurate market calculation. "But time-to-market issues, and the broad array of expertise necessary for a single product, is getting to be too much for even the largest of such firms," Murray said.

"The approach we are taking is to depend entirely on industry standard tools and operating systems," said Murray. "We are keeping our focus on services, and do not plan to reinvent the wheel" with another set of proprietary RTOSes and tools. "Our engineers are conversant in virtually every operating system, language and design environment in the industry." Whatever the OEM - be it a large consumer electronics company or a startup developing a new product - is comfortable with is what Cadence's embedded software systems group will use, he said.
