Hi Frank

Most symbols are four letters, but some have five.

The symbols for securities that trade on an exchange -- New York Stock Exchange, or American Stock Exchange, for example -- may have one, two or three letters in their symbols.

Stocks that trade using the NASDAQ Quotation System -- National Market System, Small Cap, and Over the Counter stocks -- usually have four-letter symbols. These issues may have a fifth letter, the meaning of which may be found at this site... smallcapinvestor.com.
