LNG WORLD TRADE AND LNG-FED POWER PRODUCTION
Developers of TAGS Delay Project, Remain Optimistic
Facing a May 22, 1998, construction start-up deadline, developers of the Trans-Alaska Gas System (TAGS) have filed a motion with FERC to extend the time within which project sponsor, Yukon Pacific, Anchorage, may begin construction of its LNG export project through May 22, 2001.
Conceding that "a commission denial of this motion would be a serious set-back for the project, and possibly even cause its abandonment," Yukon Pacific points to the progress which has been made on TAGS since the original order of May 22, 1995: the establishment of the state-sponsored North Slope gas commercialization team; a memorandum of understanding by the major North Slope gas producers to seriously examine making TAGS possible; and state legislation proposed by Alaska Governor Tony Knowles calling for tax incentives and related measures which would improve the commercial viability of the project.
