*AV*--ASYT is a subject that I could write volumes on. I am somewhat of a "highly sought after" expert and free consultant on the subject of WIT (Wafer Isolation Technology). So in a nutshell:

1. Imagine the cost of keeping a hospital operating room sterile on a continual basis. Imagine if you could accomplish the same end results (preventing infection during the operation) by providing an ultra sterile environment 4 feet in all directions from the specific patient. This is one aspect of SMIF. Instead of providing a clean environment throughout the entire manufactuirng area, you provide ultraclean environments around each process tool or manual process station. Operating costs drop dramatically and any contamination or particulate excursions are confined to a very restricted volume of space.

2. Imagine a way to provide an ultra clean way of transporting materials (IC wafers in progress) through more than 400 process steps or through over 100 pieces of process equipment and minimize the defects that could be induced by prximity to humans or the huge volume of space within a manufacturing Fabrication area. SMIF PODs isolate the wafers from the external environment.

3. Imagine providing mechanical interfaces that these self contained wafer carrying PODs can be placed on such that the manufacturing process is slightly more automated while reducing the amount of defects associated with handling of the wafers at each of the process steps and tools.

4. Imagine a system of electronic process step readers that virtually guarantee that no misprocessing of wafers occur due to human error. An electronic tag of sorts mount to the wafer POD that can determine if it has been not only loaded on the correct mechanical interface, but also up/downloads recipes and/or data to allow paperless tracking of work in process.

You have the company in a nutshell here. A majority of the stuff is not only patented but the patents actually make it impossible for a "me too" company to come in an displace ASYT in an existing facility without a complete replacement of SMIF hardware.

ASYT has more than an 85% marketshare and its "competitors" are not strong enough to impact their positive future. As a matter of fact, the ongoing aggressive protection of existing ASYT patents may cause hardship for a competitor since I think ASYT will prevail.
