R2 technobabble....

Valentine wondered, about the long tutorial, "... And don't forget older signaling protocols such as R1/R2. They will have to be embedded in quite a few applications using legacy switching equipment."

Frank responds: "And where did you come across R-type signaling, if I might ask? Let me guess, Buenos Aires? Rio?"

R2 signalling is all over the second and third worlds... in Latin America, Africa and Asia, as well as Eastern Europe. The R2 interface I worked on for a major RAS box provider (which same RAS also does VOIP) is up and running, serving internet clients in Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, The Czech Republic, Malaysia, and New Zealand... just to name some scattered countries. Yes, some of those places also have ISDN capability, but either they can't install fast enough, or there are problems with establishing tariffs.

VOIP systems are going to need R2 signalling, too... although ISDN and SS7 will be first priority.
