where did the volume go?

Perhaps the same place as visitors to the Web site. Relevant Knowledge reports that unique visitors to Amazon.com dropped from 4.859 mil to 4.178 mil from March to April, respectively. In terms of rankings, AMZN dropped from 16th to 23rd. They had been climbing in the rankings.

Perhaps it's just seasonality, but I think most expected that with Web usage continuing to grow and "e-tailing" gaining wider acceptance, that this would offset seasonality for some time to come.
