Jon: How much CPU horsepower would it take to deliver the kind of sound users want? Would 100 MHz worth of a Pentium II do the trick? Would 200 MHz? I'm not saying that today's CPUs are well-equipped to handle great sound. And I'm not saying that feeding off the CPU is the "architectural ideal". On the other hand, we all know that a year from now, the 400 MHz Pentium II will be at or near the low-end of the market, and a year from then 600 MHz or 800 Mhz will be the low end. Taking 100 MHz from these higher numbers will become a lower percentage of CPU. At some point, doesn't it make sense to go this route?
