Thread:
I bought a VTech phone a few weeks ago. Model VT 2910c, 2 line 900 Mhz digital cordless, with caller ID, $179 at Staples. Been using it for a while, very well designed, comfortable. Many features built in, good battery life. Overall, much better then the Uniden it replaces. I don't know if the plastic phone and base is a Deswell product ("Made in China"), but suspect it is.
Here's the interesting part. I had bought a Sony model SPP-M920 for $299 a few months ago. Had to exchange it for another when the keypad started working erratically. When the same thing happened on the new one, I gave up and got a refund. I bought the VTech at Staples, where the sales clerk told me it was a new product line for them. Interesting, since this was shortly after Deswell ramped up production. They told me they no longer stocked the Sony model I had bought because of quality problems (I had bought mine elsewhere, so the problem must have been widespread). VTech has a full range of 1 and 2-line 900Mhz phones starting at $99. They seem to be priced below Sony on all models (mine was $120 cheaper for the exact same features!), and appear to be just as well-designed, if not better. I am impressed with the VTech product and they now appear to be selling them to high volume retailers (like Staples), which should translate into strong sales for Vtech and therefore Deswell.
I would be interested to hear what other major retailers are now carrying VTech products, so your assignment is to check out the phone department in stores, see if they carry VTech, and ask how long they've stocked them and how they are selling. Report back to the thread. Road trip!
