The satellite failure is going to be bigger news this weekend. I think there is a feature story scheduled for ABC News tonight. It will take a week to move another satellite into the proper orbit (if that works). Until then, many people will be without pager service.

A meteor shower is coming up, of the type that we haven't had during the modern space era. Some think it could blind or kill a significant percentage of our satellites. This will certainly be mentioned in the press this weekend, and I expect a pullback.

If we lose many satellites, it will affect long-distance telephones, television (distribution of canned shows would have to be sent via snail mail, broadcast of live news and sporting events would be severely curtailed), security of the U.S. and other countries who rely on spy satellites to gather intelligence, etc.
