I use candlestick charting and have found it to be the best for me. I also use other technical analysis, but Japanese candlesticks are the best. In fact, I have found japanese candlesticks to be very good on an 30 minute intra-day basis. I use Quote.Com's Market Edge service which gives me real-time charting (with candlesticks) and streaming real-time quotes, for a reasonable price.

There is a book call "Japanese Candlestick Tecniques" by Steve Nisson which is an excellent book. It is available from Amazon.Com for about $48.
